Prices are matched plant by plant and by how it is sold, so a tissue-culture cup is never priced against a potted plant. New to a format? How to prepare and plant each one. Prefer to buy in person? Try the UK shops map.
Where care data comes from. Difficulty and position are ours where we hold a plant profile. Where we do not, we show what the shop stated on its own listing, marked with a dotted underline — hover or tap it to see which shop said so. We never present a shop’s rating as our own, and ours always takes precedence.

Prices compare like with like: a listing is only matched to another when it is the same product and the same form or size, so a tissue culture cup is never priced against a potted plant. A shop that is out of stock never counts as “cheaper”.
The same plant, the same day, a different price
Across every product two or more independent shops had in stock at the last refresh.
Why plants vary most. A canister filter is a manufactured product with a recommended retail price, so shops cluster within a few pounds of each other. A plant is living stock — grown, potted and shipped differently by every supplier — with no list price to anchor to. It is the category where checking actually pays.
Where the gap is widest today
Same plant, same form, in stock at every shop counted.
| Plant | Cheapest | Dearest | Gap | Shops |

| Hygrophila Costata | £3.99 | £8.99 | +125% | 2 |

Two of our shops are one company. Aquascaping Express and Pro Shrimp share an owner and price almost identically, so they count once. Including both made the hardscape and filtration gaps read 0% — measuring a business against itself rather than the market.
Price history
Recording for 7 days across 1,983 listings. Movers, trends and “cheapest we have seen” need 14 days behind a listing before they mean anything — a lowest-ever price drawn from a few days is a coincidence, not a finding, so this stays empty until the data can carry it.
What went off the shelf
Everything that sold out, less everything that came back, valued at the price it was listed at. Across all three catalogues.

This is not a sales figure. We can see that a listing stopped being buyable, not why — it may have sold, been delisted, or run short at the supplier. Nothing here knows how many of anything a shop held, so a £7.99 plant counts once whether they had one left or fifty. Read it as how much of the market moved, not as money anyone took.

Why there is no “cheapest shop” table. Price comparison belongs on the product row, where you can see which item, which form and which shops were in stock. Rolled into a league table it loses all of that: a shop that mostly sells things nobody else stocks has almost nothing to be compared on, and would look expensive purely for carrying a distinctive range. That would mislead, and this tool is not here to rank shops.
Aquascaping Express and Pro Shrimp are owned by the same company. Stock percentages are a snapshot from the last refresh and move daily. “Sole stockist” counts products no other shop we track lists at all.
Delivery changes the answer
On a single plant, postage can be close to half of what you actually pay. The cheapest plant and the cheapest order are rarely the same thing.
| Shop | Standard delivery | Free over |
|---|---|---|
| Aquascaping Express | £3.99 | £39.00 |
| Pro Shrimp | £3.49 | £49.00 |
| Horizon Aquatics | £4.99 | £50.00 |
| Cloud Aqua | £4.95 | £50.00 |
| Dennerle Plants | — | £59.00 |
| Aquarium Gardens | £4.99 | £60.00 |
| Aqua Essentials | £4.99 | — |
| Charterhouse Aquatics | — | — |
The basket already does this maths. Build a planting list and the order planner works out the cheapest way to actually buy it, postage included — which regularly means one slightly dearer shop rather than splitting an order four ways and paying delivery four times.
Delivery terms are checked by hand. Confirm on the shop’s own site before ordering. An em dash means we have not recorded that shop’s terms yet — not that delivery is free.

One shop being out of stock is ordinary. A plant only one shop carries has no fallback though — there is nowhere else we track to buy it, which is why the two counts above are kept apart.

No hardscape matches those filters.
Substrate is branded and sized, so a match is exact — and it carries a price per litre, which settles whether the 9L beats three 3L. Loose rock is compared by the kilo, though trade names like “seiryu” are used loosely between shops. Wood is listed rather than ranked: every shop grades it into its own size bands and no two pieces are alike. Working out how much you need? Try the substrate calculator, or the UK shops map to pick your stone in person.
About brands. These come from the maker each shop records against a product. Most shops also write it into the product name, so you can see it on their page. A few keep it in a field their storefront never displays — those are marked shop-tagged in the filter, and on the row you can hover the brand to see which it is.
Loading filtration…

No filtration matches those filters.
A filter is its model, so these match far more exactly than plants or stone do — same brand, same model, same type. Where we have researched a model, the row also carries its flow rate and rated tank size, which lets you sort by price per 100 litres/hour rather than by price alone. Working out what size you need? Try the filter capacity calculator.
About the specs. Flow and rated tank come from our own research file of 51 matched models, every figure taken from the manufacturer where possible and left blank rather than guessed. They are the maker’s numbers, measured with no media and no head height — treat them as a way to rank filters against each other, not as what you will get in your tank.
